What was normal in the life of Jesus was meant to be normal for every believer. When Jesus prayed, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven,” he set a model. Every believer was created to be an open heaven. Our privilege and responsibility is to bring heaven to earth, here and now.
In the Sermon on the Mount as recorded in Matthew’s account of the gospels, Jesus made a statement that introduces the topic we are dealing with today: “Your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matt 6:10). That verse states the fact that God wants and desires to bring heaven to earth – to manifest heaven on earth. It is His dream that all of heaven, its life, culture, system and practices be an earthly reality.
When we examine that prayer by Jesus, we see the amazing fact that God does not just want us to wait until we get to heaven before we experience the glory of heaven, but that we can experience it now in Jesus. For in Jesus, heaven has come to earth.
How do we make this an everyday reality in our lives?
First, one has to embrace their new identity and citizenship. In Philippians 3:20, the Scripture says that we are citizens of heaven. That means that even while we are on Earth, our citizenship is of another kingdom and nation – we are therefore ambassadors here. This kind of knowledge and understanding will affect the way we live and conduct ourselves here on earth.
For example, a United States ambassador in any nation of the world lives as a US citizen in spite of the nation. The economy and system of that nation does not affect him in any way. His country takes full responsibility for his well being, sustenance and livelihood, while he in turn brings to bear on that nation, the powers, systems, culture and influence of the sending nation.
This is what we as citizens of heaven do on earth. We interpret and exert the culture, lifestyle, attitudes and influence of the Kingdom of Heaven on the earth environment, where we live, work and play.
Second, we must learn what God wants to teach us as to how to live as citizens of heaven on earth i.e. ambassadors of Christ. The Bible is the constitution of the kingdom of heaven and in it we learn the lifestyle and ways of the kingdom. In order to be able to relive heaven on the earth, we must give ourselves completely to studying and knowing what the bible says and put them to practice.
Knowledge is a fundamental key in this kingdom; for it is they that know their God that are strong and will do exploits in the kingdom. That means the degree to which we exert the influence of heaven on earth depends on what we know about the kingdom and it’s King.
Third, we must learn and know that Heaven on earth is not just about power, miracles, signs, prophecies, gifts of Spirit, but that it is also about lifestyle, relationship, thinking, attitudes, words, how we behave. In reliving heaven on earth, we also should be careful to know that heaven is not just all about power but relationships, attitudes and mindsets. It is Ok to walk in the power of the kingdom but it is much more important to know that God is a God of relationship. The first thing in His mind is to have children who walk in friendship and fellowship with Him and out of that relationship can and will come power for service.
Forth, that relationship with God is more important to God than meetings. We must know the value that God places in relationship than He places on meetings, procedures and systems. Some of us seek to put meeting above personal relationship with God, but the true perspective of heaven is relationship first before and above any other thing.
Fifth, God wants us to manifest His nature of love and not just do His works. It is important to know that God is not POWER, yes, He has power, but He is LOVE. What you have is not as important as who you are. So to bring heaven to bear on earth, we must place above all else the manifestation of His nature which is love. For where power cannot get you, love will. (See 1Cor 13:1-8)
Next we will look at how to manifest Heaven here on earth, through the Fruit of the Spirit. This is the tangible presence of God among us, as the Holy Spirit reveals the Father in us.
